A Survival Guide to NYC: Winter Weather Edition

I’m gonna spit some hashtag realness on you real quick. I am struggling with this whole “real seasons” thing NYC has going on. Coming from the South, all we really get is “hot” and “so hot you might die” weather. It’s March, so by now they are in the “hot” weather stage where you get to go outside and enjoy it while it lasts. Here, however, we are still getting 30 degree weather, aka weather where all you wanna do is stay in bed all day in a big blanket. Some more realness? This has me moody as hell and I now know why everyone says New Yorkers are mean. Turns out, we’re all just really cold and on the verge of tears about being outside in it (just me???). Here’s how I’ve been combating the cold weather and attempting to be warm:

  1. Heated Blanket

This is number one for a reason, ladies (and dudes I guess). 100% the best purchase of my life was when I bought my 35 dollar heated blanket. I discovered these beautiful babies when my college dorm roommate decided she wouldn’t ever turn on the heater. Ever. I saw one at Target just as winter started and it was as if God himself came down and said “You gon be alright.” I knew I was gonna have to get one when I got here and thank god I did. My room stays pretty warm while I sleep but it’s damn cold as soon as I wake up and as soon as I walk in the door after work. All I have to do is turn it on and it takes maybe 5 minutes to heat up. Okay I’m done gushing I just love it SO MUCH.

2. Buy some sweatpants (thick ones)

This might be like a “duh,” but I really never wore sweatpants back home because I was really never that cold. Leggings always seemed to be just enough, so my sweatpants went too good ole goodwill when I moved. I came to immediately regret this as stepping outside just for a coffee was torture on my legs that somehow felt bare. I also decided to pick up running after a few months off for medical reasons (let’s be real I gained a couple pounds and was not having that shit), so

3. Get a big, warm coat that also happens to be cute

I got my big coat from Express right at the beginning of December and its the best decision I made besides my heated blanket. It’s over sized, wool and hits me right at the calf. You definitely want something as long as possible too keep warm and even better if it fits basically like a blanket. I wear mine basically everyday (cause people who have like 8 coats must also have 8 closets to put them in when its summer) and it just happens to be really cute so a win-win.

4. Earmuffs are a real thing not just a cute accessory in the movies

I HAAAAAATTTEEE the way I look in hats and beanies because I think maybe my head has a weird shape? Also I kinda look like a skater girl or something which is not a good look on me. Hence, the reason I got ear muffs. They have saved me while running (yeah I actually try to run in this weather too like an idiot) and when I just wanna pretend I can’t hear cat-callers and weird dudes.

5. Snow boots, UGG boots, just any fur-lined boot.

Here’s a scenario: You want a bagel. It’s Saturday at 11am (yeah you’re being lazy today). It’s also 20 degrees. What do you put on to grab said bagel? Tennis shoes= cold toes. Ugg boots with cabin socks=The perfect combo. Nobody likes cold toes and ain’t nobody trying to wear cute booties just to grab the weekly coffee and bagel combo.

Here are some tips for when you’re moody about this weather and need a pick me up:

1. Do something every week that’s just for you

Get a pedi, get a mani, get some bubble bath stuff, get a pizza, go shopping, have a movie night with some gals, get some wine, get some new shoes you’ve been eyeing, get some fancy coffee, get a new book, literally just do anything that makes you feel good, heck do all of those things in one week. I can’t tell you how good it feels just to call someone and be like “dude I almost cried today thinking about going outside” and having you’re friend be like “Omg me too I hate everything.”

2. Plan a trip somewhere even if its just a staycation

I have the luxury of having every fancy hotel I could ever nee right here and sometimes, I just wanna not be in my apartment where I live with other people. It’s just great to get away, even just for a night. Even better, plan a trip somewhere warm for a weekend and have something to look forward to to get you through some of the rougher days (aka me dreaming of my NOLA trip in a couple weeks!!!)

3. Remind yourself that it’s temporary and in a few weeks, you’ll be sweating your butt off.

It’s kinda funny how we think about the future ally the time, except when we’re miserable and we can only be sad about what its like right now. Being upset is a normal human thing, but there’s no reason to be upset about something as fickle as the weather(most talking to myself here).

Cheers to Daylight savings time ending and Spring being around the corner!!
